Eating Adventures in CALIFORNIA- Part 2

Hello buttercups!

You know what I realized? Thanksgiving is in 2 weeks from YESTERDAY. Which means it’s in less than 2 weeks!! I am SO pumped about this information. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Yes, it beats Christmas. We celebrated it very well in my home growing up so it brings fond memories. Plus, I’m a foodie….what else do you expect? Of course a holiday centered around a large meal of super delicious food would be my favorite.

I’m writing to you guys from John Wayne airport in Orange County on my way back to the great state of Texas. I am stuck in the airport for a good 3+ hours because I had to return my car by noon even though my plane doesn’t leave until 3:45.

I got here and realized just as I was about to go through security that I left my phone in the rental car I had just turned in. Of course. I run down to the rental car area, not because I’m in any kind of rush since I have over 3 hours to get on my plane, but just because. I find my rental car I turned in and my phone right in the front seat. Goof number one. At least I didn’t realize it AFTER I went through security.

Since it’s lunch time and I’m starving, I get a nice little salad to go from California Pizza Kitchen which of course costs me an arm and leg, and I sit down at a random seat to eat it. I grab it and the top of the to-go packaging flies off and the salad goes everywhere. I mean, all over the seat, my stuff, me, the floor…none of it is salvageable. The girl next to me says “aawww” with pity. Yep, I’m that girl that just dropped her $15 salad everywhere.

So I go to a different store and buy another $15 salad because I’m that hungry. It didn’t really help that much so I’m still pretty hungry. Now I’m stuck in McDonald’s (not where I got salad #2, just to clarify) because it’s the only area around here with outlets and I need to charge some stuff. Why only McDonald’s? All these signs about Filet-o-fish and the McRib are making me a little nauseous.

Let’s hope I make it to Dallas in one piece, right?? I can’t help but laugh!

So my husband and I spent our small vacation portion of our time in California in Newport Beach. WOW. This place is AMAZING. Like luxury and beauty and beaches everywhere. This is the area where they filmed The OC and parts of Laguna Beach. So picture that plus a ton of Maserati, Porsche, and Ferrari dealerships, and you get the type of area we are staying in.

We went ALL out. I actually ate pretty well until my husband shows up. Then we just went for it. That always happens when I’m with him. Gosh I love that man!

Lunch at Urth Caffe Santa Monica after I picked him up at the airport. I got some veggie chili and curry chicken salad! Plus this delicious Honey Vanilla almondmilk latte!

WAIT. How could I forget this amazing bakery I went to on my way to LAX called Buttercelli. All their goodies are organic, natural, gluten free and vegan and/or paleo. AMAZING. I got a chocolate chip cookie, cinnamon bun, and pumpkin donut to share with my hubby. IMG_2365

That night once we got to Newport Beach, we looked up restaurants to go to in the area and found out about The Cannery. There was a picture of some chips and salsa and sushi to go with it, so we thought we’d try. Well, little did we know we were going to one of the most expensive restaurants and they definitely didn’t have chips and salsa. Haha! We went along with it and just kept ordering stuff…appetizers, entrees, wine…realizing it was okay to just go completely overboard for a night.

Appetizer- Roasted pepper stuffed with soft goat cheese, pine nuts, golden raisins, topped with balsamic pearls.

My entree- King salmon on top of some quinoa, swiss chard & roasted shallots, with roasted yam puree. Divine!

The next morning we hit up a little caffe called Haute Cakes Caffe. Absolutely adorable little spot that is exactly how I would want a breakfast shop to look if I owned one.

Owen got these amazing gluten free oatmeal blueberry pancakes.

Lunch was at an Indian food place. Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Curry (with garlic naan)

Then we were naughty.


Did you even know that existed? What in the world! I just had a scoop of salty caramel ice cream which I think was the best ice cream I’ve ever eaten. Owen got their special of an actual Sprinkles cupcake cut in half with a scoop of ice cream in the middle. He didn’t finish it.

Hey, I figured after doing this earlier in the day it was okay, right??


Dinner was True Food Kitchen, which we’ve been to before in Arizona. It was too good last time to pass up again. I was so sick by this point so I was a lame dinner date. Poor hubby. But I got some miso soup, a hot ginger/honey/lemon drink, and this amazing fall salad with kale, squash, goat cheese, nuts, pomegranates, and apples.

The next morning we woke up and went to My Gally which was an adorable hole-in-the-wall type of place with amazing coffee and even more amazing breakfast burritos. (no picture :()

I dropped off my hubby at rehearsal for the tour he is on, and was on my own. I was still pretty full from the breakfast burrito, so I worked out and then had a late lunch of My Fit Foods. Chicken, broccolini, sweet potato, and this bag of egg white chips which were okay, not awesome. I like this place because they give really good portion sizes and everything is healthy and light!

I camped out at Whole Foods most of the afternoon with some coffee and a journal. It was divine. My dinner was this delicious herb-roasted turkey breast, sriracha-roasted cauliflower, and pancetta-roasted shallots and brussel sprouts.

And indulged in these chocolate covered bacon toffees. WHAT? They were so interesting and awesome. I ate way more than this little bunch of 4 in my hand. I ate some with dinner and then a bit later after my husband’s concert.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 presetI fed them to some of the band members (my husband included) and told them “They’re from Whole Foods so they can’t be THAT bad for you.” If I tell myself that enough maybe I will believe it.

Husband left for the Kingdom Come tour last night with Bryan and Katie Torwalt after the first show. He’s officially living on a bus for the next two weeks. I miss him already. Can’t wait for him to get back! Check out the hashtag #kingdomcometour to follow them! So proud of him!

Rose Cafe Bakery this morning by myself was a huge breakfast. That egg white omelette is stuffed with bacon, mushrooms, and tomatoes. And can we laugh for a second at my order of hash browns? Didn’t expect that. I was shocked that I ate all of this. California makes me hungry.


Lunch today is my second $15 salad from the airport. Other than the Bleu cheese this salad was bomb.

IMG_2451So now I am headed back to Texas, with a very full heart, refreshed mind, and happy belly. Haha! I feel totally at peace with all my indulgences and know that trips like this don’t happen very often for us at all. But honestly, I’m happy to return to some routine when I get home. Even though I enjoyed my fair share of gluten, dairy, and sugar while on the trip, each time I did I honestly felt terrible. I thought I was gonna barf a little last night after eating those bacon toffee chocolates. Also every time I ate some bread I wanted to lay down the rest of the day. Trips like this are fun but also a good reminder of why I choose the lifestyle I live. It makes me free to enjoy life, feel good, and crush goals in life! I’m ready to get back into my normal ways so I can continue doing those things.

But…. my foodie adventures were crazy fun. I am inspired to say the least.
